The Olympic Games were spawned in ancient Greece, along with democracy and the fundamentals of philosophy, science and mathematics. The Greek civilisation is renowned for contributing many of the cultural building blocks that western civilisation is founded on. It’s a veritable treasure trove of history but it’s the simple pleasures that make a visit to modern Greece so very appealing: whitewashed ancient ruins, good food and wine, endless miles of coastline lapped by turquoise waters, and a hospitality as warm as the sunny days. The country still exudes a traditional charm. Black-clad women still deliver vegetables to island tavernas on panniered donkeys, while bronzed, weather-beaten fishermen sit in the sun, drink thick coffee, and play dominoes or backgammon. Greeks are social beings – don’t be surprised if you are welcomed into the fold with a glass of ouzo. Opa!
