Cruising the Kimberley: A Journey of Awe and Adventure Aboard Le Jacques Cartier

Moments That Matter: Connection, Culture, and Camaraderie at Sea while exploring the Kimberley

I’ve just returned from one of the most exhilarating and soul-stirring experiences of my life—a 10-night expedition cruise aboard PONANT’s Le Jacques Cartier, exploring the remote and pristine wonders of the Kimberley coast. Departing and returning to Darwin, this voyage was a revelation, not just in terms of scenery, but in the richness of culture, wildlife, and camaraderie.

Getting There: Easier Than You Think

Many imagine the Northern Territory as distant and difficult to reach, but it’s surprisingly accessible. I flew from Auckland to Brisbane, then on to Darwin—a straightforward trans-Tasman journey. What awaited me was nothing short of extraordinary.

Nature’s Masterpiece: The Kimberley Coast

From the moment we set sail, the landscape unfolded like a living canvas. Towering rock formations, ancient rainforests, and vibrant birdlife made every moment a photographer’s dream. As an avid photographer myself, I was in heaven—especially during our Zodiac excursions, which took us deep into untouched reefs, sacred Aboriginal rock art sites, and encounters with traditional landowners who shared stories that added profound meaning to the journey.

Unforgettable Highlights

One of the most unforgettable experiences was a helicopter flight over the majestic Mitchell Falls. Seeing the cascading waters and rugged terrain from above was breathtaking—and the photos I captured will be treasured for years to come.

On board, the experience was just as enriching. PONANT’s all-inclusive approach meant no need for drink packages, and the crew were exceptional in catering to every guest’s needs. Daily lectures prepared us for each destination, while photography workshops helped us make the most of our cameras—whether professional or just our phones. Evenings were filled with entertainment, including dance nights and a resident poet who shared heartfelt reflections that resonated deeply.

A Community at Sea

What truly set this cruise apart was the sense of community. PONANT offers select sailings with no single supplement, making it ideal for solo travellers. I met several guests who had recently lost partners or were travelling alone for the first time. One woman told me, while we were swimming in the pool, that she’d never felt so welcomed—everyone on board felt like one big family. She even said she’d happily travel again with the same group if we all booked another voyage together. That’s a testament to the magic PONANT creates.
