Don’t be fooled into thinking the former penal settlement is all there is to see. The readily accessible Tasman Peninsula is home to world-class walks, incredible landmarks and fascinating history. The temptation is to join a day tour from Hobart to Port Arthur, but that means you can’t explore the rest of the incredible Tasman Peninsula. It’s only a short drive from Hobart.

Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1/2 - Collect your rental car from Hobart and make your way to Port Arthur. It’s only a short drive between Hobart and Port Arthur approximately 95 kilometres) and typically takes around 90 minutes if you drive it nonstop. Despite its straight-line proximity of about 40 kilometres, you’ll find the drive interesting as you navigate around the waterways to reach Port Arthur. En-route, the road passes through pretty towns and scenic landscapes.

The most common drive is via Richmond, Dunalley, and Eaglehawk Neck before reaching Port Arthur, and along the way, you can stop at well-known sites like the historic town of Richmond to see the sandstone Richmond Bridge, built by convict labour in 1825 and the oldest large bridge in Australia. The town has also retained over 50 buildings from the Edwardian period, making it a lovely spot to wander. But with Richmond being only a 25 minutes’ drive from Hobart, it might feel a bit soon into your journey to stop but we think you should take a quick coffee break here. At least to check out the bridge.

Another must is to spend a bit of time in the Tasman National Park. There are some great spots to check out including the Tessellated Pavement, Devil’s Kitchen, Tasman Arch and the Blowhole at Eaglehawk Neck.

You’ll want to give yourself a full day to explore Port Arthur Historic Site. In 1833, it became one of the most feared convict settlements anywhere in the world, was abandoned 44 years later and began attracting tourists from the 1920s. These days, you can explore the 30 buildings either on your own or on a guided walk and take a boat cruise past the site of the Point Puer Boys’ Prison and the Isle of the Dead. There are also other guided tours and experiences, including a lantern-lit ghost tour.
Overnight: 2 nights at Port Arthur Villas

Day 3 - On the return drive to Hobart, stop at a couple of the windswept beaches to stretch your legs and admire the view once again.
